Assignment / Project   Number  06

Spreadsheet Conditional Statements

Project 06 is another project that may be more difficult to complete without instruction unless you already have some experience with spreadsheets beyond the very basic level.  Remember that your instructor is not fond of answering questions outside of class that you would have known the answers to if you had attended class.  As a reminder or checklist, you may want to revisit this link that lists common errors.

This project is about more of MS-Excel, about using built-in mathematical functions in Excel, and in particular about how to write CONDITIONAL STATEMENTS in spreadsheets.  A conditional statement is a type of "formula" that can take on any one of two very different values, depending on the value of something else in the spreadsheet.  Conditional statements are often also called IF STATEMENTS.  The built-in functions can be used to avoid writing out some more complex formulas like, for example, a formula that would average a range of  numbers or a formula that would find the minimum value in a range of numbers.

In class we will talk about how to write a basic conditional statements and about some of the values that they can have.  And we will talk about how to insert some built-in functions into a spreadsheet.  As an example, we will construct a checkbook ledger and calculate current balances, minimum balance, average balance, and sums of deposits and withdrawals, using conditional statements and functions.  Your assignment will be to create a similar  MS-Excel Spreadsheet.  You can click here for an example of a checkbook ledger, but notice that the example does not contain any of the formulas or functions.  It is just a printout of numbers.  Your project will contain formulas.

You will need to turn in the following to the instructor on the date this assignment is due (check the class schedule):
  1) PRINTOUT #1:  A printed copy of your spreadsheet, showing the numbers in each cell,
with your name and course ID number in the upper left corner.
  2) PRINTOUT #2:  A printed copy of your spreadsheet, showing the formulas in each cell,
with your name and course ID number in the upper left corner.
  3) DISK FILE:  A copy of the disk file on which you have saved your spreadsheet.
The name of the file on the disk should be "checks.xls"
The label on the disk should have YOUR NAME, and the words:
       ASSIGNMENT #06 -- CONDITIONAL STATEMENTS
  4) OTHER:  The above items are all that is required for this assignment.
