Graphing: Column Charts and Pie Charts 

This project is about using MS-Excel to make graphs, and in particular about making histograms (also called column charts) and making pie charts.  MS-Excel is often used to create graphs of various kinds because its "graph wizards" are simple to use and because much data is likely stored in an MS-Excel spreadsheet format anyway.  In this project, you will use MS-Excel to create a column chart depicting the enrollment in various programs in the School of Business and Economics both this semester and one year ago.  You will also create a pie chart showing the percent of total enrollment in each program for this semester only.  Click here for an example of two such charts.  (Note that in the example both charts are on the same page, but your project should have the pie chart on a separate worksheet page.  Note also that the data is not from the current semester.)  So that you don't need to re-type the data for this semester's enrollment into your own spreadsheet, you can click here to see the current semester's data and then save the data to your own spreadsheet file.

In class we will talk about how to create column charts and pie charts in MS-Excel using the "graph wizard" and then about how to edit those charts to better present the data that they contain.  In your project you should do some editing to the charts that result directly from using the graph wizard.  For example, you could change the sizes of some parts of the charts and fonts and change some of the colors. 

You will need to turn in the following to the instructor on the date this assignment is due (check the class schedule):
  1) PRINTOUT #1:  A printed copy of your spreadsheet, showing the data, the column chart,
       and the pie chart.  (The pie chart should be on a separate page.).
  2) PRINTOUT #2:  None.
  3) DISK FILE:  A copy of the disk file on which you have saved your spreadsheet. 
       The name of the file on the disk should be "enrollment.xls"
       The label on the disk should have YOUR NAME, and the words:
       ASSIGNMENT #07 -- COLUMN AND PIE CHARTS
  4) OTHER:  The above items are all that is required for this assignment.
